Anthropic's Claude Mythos: The AI They Refused to Release (And Why That's Good for Your Business)

Anthropic just built an AI so good at finding security vulnerabilities that they're refusing to release it to the public.

In a few weeks, their new model — Claude Mythos — found a bug in OpenBSD that had been hiding for 27 years. It found a bug in FFmpeg, the video engine behind YouTube, Netflix, Instagram, and TikTok, that 5 million automated tests had missed. It found chained vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel that let a regular user become a full system administrator — and it chained them together autonomously, the way elite human hackers do.

Then Anthropic did something nobody expected.

They partnered with 12 of the biggest tech companies on the planet, committed $100 million in AI usage credits, and handed Mythos to the defenders before anyone else could get their hands on it. The project is called Project Glasswing, and it might be the most important precedent in AI this decade.

Here's the full breakdown — what Claude Mythos is, what it actually did, and what it means for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and anyone running a business online in 2026.

What Is Claude Mythos?

Claude is an AI made by Anthropic — think OpenAI's biggest competitor. They build AI models that can write, code, reason, and solve complex problems.

Mythos is Anthropic's newest and most powerful model ever built. It scores higher than every previous Claude model across every published benchmark. This isn't an incremental upgrade. It's a generational leap.

These are the numbers Anthropic published themselves. The jumps aren't small. They're the kind of leaps that only happen once every couple of years in this industry.

The Locksmith Analogy

Here's the part most people are missing: Anthropic didn't train Mythos to hack.

They trained it to be exceptional at writing code. And being exceptional at writing code turned out to be the same skill as being exceptional at breaking code.

Think of it like this. Imagine you train someone to be the best locksmith in the world. You teach them how every mechanism works. Every weak point. Every flaw in the design. You never taught them to break into houses.

But now ask yourself — how hard would it be for that person to break into any house on the planet?

That's Mythos. Anthropic was trying to build a better coder. They accidentally built one of the best hackers that's ever existed. And the skill came for free. It wasn't the goal. It was the side effect.

This is the part that should matter to you: this wasn't a training choice. It was an emergent property. And it's going to show up in every frontier AI model that ships in the next two years.

What Mythos Actually Found

Benchmarks are abstract. What Mythos did in the real world is what should stop you.

27 years. A bug sitting inside OpenBSD — one of the most security-hardened operating systems in the world — that could remotely crash any server running it. Every security researcher missed it. Every automated scanner missed it. Mythos found it in weeks.

16 years. A vulnerability in FFmpeg, the open source software that processes video for basically every platform on the internet. YouTube. Netflix. Instagram. TikTok. The codebase had been tested by automated security tools more than 5 million times. Not one of those tests caught it. Mythos did.

Linux kernel privilege escalation. Multiple chained vulnerabilities that let a user with zero permissions become a full system administrator. And here's the part that gave me chills: Mythos didn't just find the individual bugs. It chained them together into a full attack — the way elite human hackers do.

A regular security tool finds flaws one at a time. Mythos was linking three, four, five flaws into one coordinated exploit path, autonomously.

That's the gap between where security was and where it is now.

The Dilemma

After running these tests, Anthropic was sitting on a problem.

They had a model that could save the internet — scanning every piece of critical infrastructure and patching every old vulnerability sitting there. And they had a model that could break the internet — handing any attacker a tool better at finding exploits than 99% of professional security teams.

Same model. Both outcomes possible.

Imagine they just shipped it. Open API, $20 a month, anyone can use it. Every script kid. Every fraud ring. Every state actor on the planet. That's not hypothetical. That's literally what their published benchmarks say this model can do.

And here's the part that should worry you more: Mythos isn't the last model that's going to be this good. Every AI lab is building better coding models right now. OpenAI. Google. Meta. All of them. And if being better at code automatically means being better at finding exploits, then every frontier model that ships over the next two years comes with the same dual-use problem baked in.

The genie is not going back in the bottle.

Project Glasswing — The Third Option

Anthropic had three choices.

Option 1: Release Mythos publicly. Take the wave of hype. Make a massive amount of money.

Option 2: Lock it in a vault forever. Pretend it doesn't exist. Let competitors catch up.

Option 3: Give it to the defenders first.

They chose option three. They built Project Glasswing, and they handed Mythos to the companies that build the software the entire internet runs on:

AWS. Apple. Broadcom. Cisco. CrowdStrike. Google. JPMorganChase. The Linux Foundation. Microsoft. NVIDIA. Palo Alto Networks.

Plus over 40 other organisations that maintain critical open source software infrastructure.

Their job? Use Mythos to scan their own code. Find the bugs. Patch them. Roll out the fixes before any attacker even knows the vulnerabilities exist.

Anthropic put serious resources behind the project:

- $100 million in model usage credits committed to partners
- $4 million donated directly to open source security — $2.5M to Alpha-Omega and OpenSSF via the Linux Foundation, $1.5M to the Apache Software Foundation
- 90-day disclosure commitment — everything they learn gets shared publicly within 90 days so the whole industry benefits

This might be the first time in history that a major AI lab has looked at one of their own models and said: "We built something too powerful to release. Here is our plan."

That's a precedent. And whether the rest of the industry follows it will define the next decade of AI.

What This Means for Your Business

Here's the part that actually matters to you as an entrepreneur, a small business owner, a marketer — someone running ads, building funnels, or selling online.

Three things.

1. The software your business runs on is about to get much safer — invisibly.

The bugs Mythos is finding sit inside the operating system on your phone. The browser your customers buy through. The video player your ads run on. The database your CRM uses. These patches are already rolling out. You won't see it happen. You'll just get a software update one day, and behind that update is an AI that found a vulnerability a human probably never would have. For the first time, AI is actively making your business safer without you having to do anything.

2. Fortune 500 security is trickling down to every small business on the planet.

Security has always been a big-company problem. Big companies hire red teams. Run penetration tests. Pay millions for security audits. Small business owners get an antivirus subscription and hope for the best. What Glasswing is doing is extending Fortune 500 grade security down to every business that depends on the same underlying software. When Mythos finds a bug in the framework your website runs on, that fix reaches you too. You're now protected by the same AI scanning that protects Apple's infrastructure. You don't pay for it. You don't even know it's happening. But you're covered.

3. Soon, you'll run this technology on your own stack.

As this capability matures, the same models that found a 27-year-old bug in OpenBSD are going to become available to you directly. Imagine being able to scan your own website, your own funnel, your own automations — and have an AI tell you: here are the three holes a competitor or a fraud ring could walk through tomorrow. That's where this is heading. And the entrepreneurs who get there first are going to have an unfair advantage — not just in security, but in trust. The Bigger Question

Anthropic just set a precedent. The question is whether anyone else will follow.

Boris Cherny, one of the people behind Claude Code at Anthropic, tweeted this the day the announcement went out:

"Mythos is very powerful and should feel terrifying. I'm proud of our approach to responsibly preview it with cyber defenders rather than generally releasing it into the wild."

Every AI lab is building better coding models right now. When OpenAI's next model can do what Mythos does — will they slow down and build a deployment plan? Will Google? Will Meta?

The labs that take this seriously — the ones that build safety plans before they need them — are going to be the labs we trust with the next decade of this technology. The ones that don't are going to be the ones that cause the headlines we're all afraid of.

This is an arms race that may not have an end. But for the first time, the defenders actually got a head start. And that matters more than most people realise.
